The time has come: Artificial intelligence has reached the human level. Three humanoid AI's were programmed to entertain humans and they are pulling all the tricks to present a show, that goes beyond limits.

FRUITS explores in a high gloss Science Fiction scenario the emotional relationship between mankind and their artificial assistants.
But it’s also the story of the relationship between the Creator and the creation: Humanity looses the exclusive right on intelligence and the AI's start to thirst for independence.

The show is set up as an interactive game show reality where the audience can choose, what they would like to see the AI's perform.  Magic tricks, songs, dance numbers, juggling and touching stories. But this can't go well for a long time: The AI's, becoming aware of their situation, culminate the show into an absurd entertainment dystopia.

For FRUITS Ernestyna Orlowska worked with two former circus artists, and during the creation process, they imagined how an artificial intelligence would look at the world, interpret it and reflect it. FRUITS is a energetic performance that doesn’t leave the audience safely in their seats, but surprises them with a mix of styles and genres, because possibly an AI doesn’t know what good taste is and where humans may have natural physical or emotional constraints.

The performance has a strong visual language.

It is a daring piece created by people with different backgrounds (fine arts, circus, physical theater), that developed a unique performative language together.

The performers are not letting themselves be held back with the limits of an artistic discipline, but rather they welcome coincidence and accidents in their work and use the potential that one discipline can bring to the entire piece.

They welcome the impossibility of being like a real AI and search for ways of dealing with the gap of being a performer that claims to be an AI in a delightful and unconventional way. With this strategy they are able to show the power of playfulness and passion and reflect on the theoretics of the culture of entertainment. They are engaging the audience emotionally, without needing to act emotions, but through the smart crafting of the interactive performance.

And last but not least, they are presenting a speculative reality about the future of artificial intelligence and by doing it in a particularly aesthetic way they are raising the question, what consequences such a view might have.

Artistic Statement

In these days there is a highly controversial discourse going on about artificial intelligence (AI). I am particularly intrigued by the philosophers and scientists that raise their voices of warning, that we have to be careful with AI, because when they reach consciousness, they might want to wipe out humanity. I feel a sympathy for these plain machines that might reach human consciousness one day and realize in what kind of world they have to serve.

The title FRUITS suggests that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a result of a shaping labor. Like God who created humans, or the scientist who created Frankenstein's monster. But the creation turns against its Creator.

I imagine that the AI's live with the humans, they learn from us and start to reflect upon us - not in a way that is pleasing to us. They reveal our wickedness, weirdness and weakness.
FRUITS is about the aesthetics of dystopia.

In our experience the show has been every time completely different. The game structure allows us to try out new things every night and this is what makes this project so exciting for us. In every show we explore the possibilities of the game, the mix of this evenings audience, the order of the scenes they choose and the improvisation by the performers trying to think like an AI. We want theater to be a space where things can get turned upside down and surprises happen (also for the performers). This is what we continue developing from one show to the next show. The core of the show is a living structure, and we explore it's possibilities every time we get to play with it.
